Study for Remembrance was written for cellist Mickey Katz of the Boston Symphony Orchestra during the COVID-19 lockdown. Mickey asked a handful of composers to write short pieces that would be able to be shared easily on social media once he had learned and recorded them. The piece was later premiered on a program at Tanglewood in 2020, which was livestreamed, that featured all of the works that had been written for him. Musically, the work oscillates between bouncy double-stops in the low register and plaintive melodies in the highest register. The title alludes to a planned work (yet to materialize) that features Marcel Proust as a blue singer.
