Deeper and Deeper plays upon the idea of receding light and consciousness. Timbral and gestural ideas slide in and out of focus, ultimately disappearing into the shadows.
The piece is intended to reflect the experience of a pair of individuals entering a deep meditative state, in which awareness of the outside world gradually dissipates as the interior worlds of the mind and body take hold.Deeper and Deeper was written at the Tanglewood Music Center in partial fulfillment of the composition fellowship program’s Piece-a-Day project.
